According to director Hajim, “Strange Frame: Love and Sax” is set in the 29th century on Jupiter’s moon Ganymede. Saxophonist Parker and guitarist Naia, fall in love and form a band. The lovers struggle when stardom is handed to Naia by an enslaving talent agent. Parker’s action adventure begins when she quests with space trucker Grenman to destroy Naia’s android double and free her true love.
Much of Hajim’s originality comes from his “cut out” animation technique. Cut out technique in traditional hand drawn animation uses flat characters, props and backgrounds cut from paper, card stock, stiff fabric or even photographs. Tech wizard Hajim and his young apprentices adapted the process to computer and scan images or vector graphics replacing physically cut out materials.“Strange frame” uses scanned textures and photographed images as a foundation for hand drawn artwork that is animated in cutout style.
Much of Hajim’s film’s originality comes from his “cut out” animation technique. “Strange frame” uses scanned textures and photographed images as a foundation for 2D hand drawn artwork that is animated in cutout style. 3D animation is used to enhance machinery and vehicles. Examples of cut out style include “The Adventures of Prince Achmed,” and “South Park.”
Award winning sound recordist Gary Rizzo is doing the sound mixing for the 2010 release date at George Lucas’ Skywalker Sound in Marin County, California. Rizzo was a part of the staff that won the Oscar for Achievement in Sound Editing for Dark Knight. His 50 feature films include Sicko, Titanic, and Batman.
Independent film-makers GB Hajim and his co-creator and music director Shelley Doty pulled a coup when Pink Floyd’s frontman guitarist Roger Waters gave permission to use his “The Gunner’s Dream” for the sound track. Pink Floyd News said: “It is a rare honour, being allowed to have Pink Floyd’s music in a dramatic film -many have asked over the years, but few have managed it.” Stanley Kubrick wanted Pink Floyd music for the sound track for “2001: A Space Odessey “
Film and animation voice talent Jason Scott Lee is the first star to sign on to the project. Lee voiced the role of Kawika in Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch.” He has starred in more than 20 features, including “Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story,” and “Junglebook.” Lee says of the project: “There’s a certain originality that I like…I hope it blows up like a giant balloon, makes tons of money to generate good will.”
Kelli Lerner of Kelli Lerner Casting CSA of Beverly Hills and New York is the project casting director and has cast for projects for directors Walter Salles and Kevin Bacon. Lerner’s casting project stars included David Arquette, Kyra Sedgwick, Marisa Tomei, Matt Dillon and Sandra Bullock.
The “strange frame:Love and Sax” voice director is one of the industry’s top names, Jamie Thomason. Thomason performs double duty as the head of casting for DisneyToon Studios, while also doing voice directing duties for the animation division’s films. According to pop culture website Made in Atlantis.com, Thomason “has directed more animated features, animated television episodes and actors of animation dialogue than any current casting and vocal director in the industry.”
The “Strange Frame” mini doc was filmed by strange frame Executive Producer Daniel Morii. Morii is creator and producer of the 2006 Emmy nominated weekly television program “Pacific Fusion.”
John Mason, Big Island Film Commissioner, says “This is going to be a breakthrough film. It going to be different. It’s going to showcase production here in Hawaii. What will happen will be like what happened in New Zealand, Canada, China and other emerging film centers. It takes this kind of breakthrough film to build an industry.”
